What is Towers vs Aliens?

Towers vs Aliens comes from an idea I've been playing with for a few years now. This first release is downloadable for windows, or playable in your browser. The core gameplay is very simple - you build blocks, stacking them into towers by choice or necessity, and use those blocks to fight off waves of alien attackers who want to destroy your blocks. It bears many similarities to tower defence games, particularly the ones which offer you a lot of freedom and effectively a blank canvas to paint your turrets and walls on. But I wanted to create something more unpredictable - typically in tower defence games you know what waves are coming, where they come from, and sometimes the mobs won't even be attacking your turrets.

With that in mind, Towers vs Aliens is much more of a conventional battle - the aliens can come in from anywhere (based on their individual tactics), and while each alien commander has a specific pool of unit types to choose from, what they pick can be different in every battle. You start out with only a few basic block types unlocked, and to get more you need to use your limited technology points - which you also use to upgrade existing turret types. This gives you a choice between reacting to what aliens you're facing right now, preparing for aliens you might face in the future, or just committing to a more long-term strategy.

This unpredictability does mean that luck plays a role - you can play against the same alien commander twice and find one game relatively easy and the other much harder. But you can't always play the same strategy and expect it to work reliably. At least, you shouldn't be able to ;) If anyone finds such a strategy I want to know so I can give the aliens new units which will counter it.

For the Future

I'm going to add new blocks, new aliens, and new alien commanders. In addition to that, I'm also working on a 'Towerpedia' which will contain information about every block and alien in the game for easy reference. There's also obviously a lot of UI details which need improvement, and balancing work on everything. I'm also very open to suggestions, so we'll see what the future brings!
